2018 Application Information for International Students
Thank you for your interest in working at The Tyler Place Resort! All applicants interested in working at The Tyler Place must be able to be here from May 22 to September 8, 2018. In addition, applicants need to have completed 2 years of University by June 2018 (or have completed at least one year of College/University and have experience traveling and living away from home).
International Students who are applying to work at The Tyler Place for the first time MUST use one of the following organizations to obtain their J-1 Visa: Camp Counselors USA, Camp Leaders or InterExchange. If you haven’t worked here before, you must use the “First Timer” program. You cannot use the “Direct Placement”, “Work and Travel” or “Returnee” program.
In addition to providing you with a J-1 visa, these organizations do the work that is impossible for us to do because we’re unable to meet you in person – they interview applicants, check references, do criminal background checks, evaluate English communication skills and send a complete and detailed application to us to review before we make a job offer. If you’d like more information about these organizations, you can look them up online. Once you’ve chosen the organization you’d like to use and gone through the application process, please be sure to let them know that you’d like your application sent to The Tyler Place to review. When we receive your application and have had a chance to look it over, we will contact you for a phone interview. After the interview, we’ll let you as soon as we can if we’ve decided to hire you. If we don’t hire you, your application will be passed on to another camp or resort. We encourage you to begin the application process as soon as possible because jobs fill up quickly and we hire on a first come, first serve basis!
It’s important to know that the organizations mentioned above charge us participant fees (in addition to the fees they charge you to apply). The fees we’re charged may cover your airfare, recruitment and screening charges, visa paperwork, accommodations in New York City, etc. For new applicants, these fees may total as much as $1,800, and any fees we’re charged will be deducted, in increments, from your paychecks over the course of the summer. (Fees vary depending on the organization you use and a variety of other factors. We will let you know the fee we’re being charged when you arrive.) So you know, fees are reduced for international students who return for a second or third summer.
If you get a job at The Tyler Place, you will be making a minimum of $9.60 per hour and working approximately 37-40 hours a week for a 16 week period. Don’t forget that we will deduct the participant fees mentioned above, so you’ll make somewhere in the neighborhood of $3,000 for this summer. Taxes will also be deducted, but you’ll get most of this money back when you file your tax return in 2018.
We provide staff with FREE housing and meals. In addition, staff are welcome to use most of the guest facilities during their time off (pools, Jacuzzi, fitness center, tennis, basketball, canoe, kayak, sailboats, etc). We also pay for your transportation from New York City to Burlington, Vermont (provided you were of one of the agencies mentioned above) and will arrange to have you picked up at the airport and brought to The Tyler Place – at no charge.
Good luck and we hope to see you this summer!
